Anti-SLAPP seminar conducted in Nicosia

Theodorus Economu

An enlightening lecture on Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) and the proposed EU Directive on protecting persons who engage in public participation from manifestly unfounded or abusive court proceedings was conducted in Nicosia at law firm Antis Triantafullides & Sons LLC, with the participation of lawyers in Cyprus. The lecture was delivered by Theodoros Economou, a lawyer practicing in Cyprus who is also the local trainer.

The seminar specifically focused on the implications of SLAPP suits within the context of Cyprus, shedding light on the potential threats to freedom of speech and public participation in the country. Through in-depth discussions and engaging case studies, participants gained valuable insights into the specific challenges and strategies to combat SLAPP suits in Cyprus. The lecture served as a platform to underscore the importance of safeguarding individuals' rights to express opinions, further empowering the attending lawyers to contribute to the protection of free speech and justice in their jurisdiction.

In addition to the above event there will be two more upcoming lectures and one more workshop. Building on the momentum generated by the previous events, these future engagements will further delve into the complexities of SLAPP actions and their impact on freedom of speech and public participation. Through these interactive sessions, we aim to continue fostering an environment for legal professionals to deepen their understanding of SLAPP and explore effective strategies to counter such lawsuits. These upcoming events will play a crucial role in raising awareness and equipping lawyers with the necessary knowledge and tools to protect democratic principles in Cyprus.
