Anti-SLAPP training continues in Cyprus

A very interactive and stimulating discussion was held during the 2nd Workshop on Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) and the proposed EU Directive on protecting persons who engage in public participation from manifestly unfounded or abusive court proceedings  at the Cyprus Bar Association on the 15th of June 2023 with the participation of lawyers in Cyprus. The workshop was conducted by Theodoros Economou, a lawyer practicing in Cyprus who is also the local trainer and Professor Maria Krambia Kapardis.

The Workshop specifically focused on the implications of SLAPP suits within the context of Cyprus, shedding light on the potential threats to freedom of speech and public participation in the country. A lot of discussion was also centered around the recent revisions to the Proposed Directive and many participants commented that it appears the revisions are watering down the Proposed Directive.

Thus far, two workshops and one lecture were held in Cyprus. There will be two more lectures in Autumn and one more workshop. Building on the momentum generated by the previous events, these future engagements will further delve into the complexities of SLAPP actions and their impact on freedom of speech and public participation. Through these interactive sessions, we aim to continue fostering an environment for legal professionals to deepen their understanding of SLAPP and explore effective strategies to counter such lawsuits. These upcoming events will play a crucial role in raising awareness and equipping lawyers with the necessary knowledge and tools to protect democratic principles in Cyprus.”
