Second Polish workshop-seminar held in Warsaw

On the 25th April 2023 in Warsaw, OKO conducted the second workshop-seminar with 17 participants. The participants included the retired Constitutional Tribunal judge prof. Ewa Łętowska, attorneys and legal counsels in international law firms (focusing on strategic litigation and pro bono legal help), lawyers in private practice and lawyers working in NGOs (focusing on promotion and protection of the rule of law, media freedom, climate and environment).

The first part of the workshop-seminar was divided into four presentations.

  • The concept of SLAPPs and its understanding in anglo-saxon and European law (dr Anna Wójcik),

  • SLAPPs in Poland from a sociological perspective (OKO.press journalist Agnieszka Jędrzejczyk)

  •  SLAPPs in civil law (attorney Anna Mazurczak and attorney Paweł Knut)

  • SLAPPs in criminal law (attorney Karolina Gierdal)

  • SLAPPs against the media and journalists (legal counsel Krzysztof Pluta).

In the second part of the workshop participants worked in groups and discussed what is a SLAPP (discussing the checklist), how to defend in SLAPP cases and how to structurally prevent SLAPPs by instruments of domestic and European law.
